Where Are the Red Dunes in Dubai? Location, Best Time, Tours and Buggy Rides
If you have seen photos of deep orange sand rolling to the horizon and wondered where they were taken, you are looking at the famous red dunes in Dubai. They are not in the city itself. They sit in the open desert a short drive away, and they are where most desert safaris, dune bashing trips, quad bike rides and dune buggy tours in Dubai take place.
This guide answers the questions our guests ask us most: where exactly the red dunes are, how to get there, when the colour and the weather are at their best, and which activities are worth your time. It is written by the team that plans and runs buggy tours in this desert, so the tips come from what actually works on the sand.
Quick answer: the red dunes most visitors mean are the Lahbab desert and the Al Badayer / “Big Red” area, south-east of Dubai, roughly 45–60 minutes by road off the Dubai–Hatta Road (E44). The best months are October to April, and the best hours are early morning and late afternoon into sunset.

Where are the red dunes in Dubai?
Dubai’s desert is not one single place. To the south and east of the city, the sand changes from pale beige near the coast to warm orange and deep red the further inland you go. When people say “the red dunes”, they usually mean one of two areas:
- Lahbab desert (the “Red Dunes”) – a wide area of high, soft, red-orange dunes south-east of the city. It is the classic setting for evening desert safaris and dune bashing.
- Al Badayer and the “Big Red” dune – a little further along the Dubai–Hatta Road, just across the border in the emirate of Sharjah. Big Red is one of the tallest and best-known dunes in the area and is popular for buggies, quad bikes and sandboarding.
Both areas are roughly 45 to 60 minutes’ drive from Downtown Dubai or Dubai Marina, depending on traffic and where your hotel is. Most tours, including ours, collect you from your hotel, so you do not need to plan the route yourself.
You may also hear about other desert spots such as Al Qudra, Al Awir, Margham or the desert conservation areas. They are beautiful, but their sand is generally lighter in colour. If the deep red colour is what you want, Lahbab and Al Badayer are the places to go. For a wider comparison, see our guide to the top dune buggy ride locations in Dubai.
Why is the sand red?
The colour comes from a thin coating of iron oxide on each grain of sand – the same compound that gives rust its colour. The further the sand has travelled and the longer it has been exposed, the more pronounced this coating becomes, which is why the dunes deeper inland look richer than the sand near the coast.
The colour also changes through the day. At midday under a high sun the dunes look pale orange. In the low light of early morning and late afternoon they glow deep red and copper. That is one of the main reasons we recommend morning and sunset slots for anyone who wants great photos.
Lahbab vs Al Badayer (Big Red): which one should you choose?
You cannot really go wrong with either area. The right choice depends on what you want to do.
| What matters to you | Lahbab (Red Dunes) | Al Badayer / Big Red |
|---|---|---|
| Sand colour | Deep red-orange | Deep red-orange |
| Best known for | Evening desert safaris, dune bashing, camp dinners | Dune buggies, quad bikes, sandboarding on high dunes |
| Feel | Wide, open dune fields | Taller dunes, more dramatic slopes |
| Location | Dubai, south-east of the city | Sharjah, along the Dubai–Hatta Road |
| Good for | Families, first-time visitors, sunset photos | Adventure seekers, buggy and quad riders |
If your main goal is a self-drive dune buggy tour, the high dunes around Al Badayer give you more variety of terrain. If you want a relaxed evening with dinner and entertainment, an evening desert safari in the red dunes is the easier choice.
How to get to the red dunes
Option 1: Hotel pickup with a tour (recommended)
This is how most visitors go. A driver collects you in a 4×4 or a comfortable vehicle, drives you to the desert meeting point, and brings you back afterwards. You do not need to know the roads, find parking or worry about getting stuck in soft sand. When you book a buggy ride with us, ask about pickup from your hotel or residence when you confirm your time.
Option 2: Drive yourself to the meeting point
If you have a car, you can drive to the edge of the desert along the Dubai–Hatta Road and meet your tour there. Normal cars should stay on the tarmac. Driving onto the dunes needs a proper 4×4, lowered tyre pressure, recovery equipment and real off-road experience. Every season, people who try it without these get stuck – so leave the dunes to a licensed operator.
Option 3: Taxi or ride-hailing
Possible, but not ideal. Getting a taxi back from the desert edge can be difficult, and most drivers will not go off the road. If you choose this option, agree the return trip before you leave.
Best time to visit the red dunes
Best months
The most comfortable season is October to April. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, the sand is cooler underfoot, and the evenings can even feel chilly in December and January – bring a light jacket. From May to September, temperatures regularly go above 40°C, so desert activities move to early morning or late afternoon. We explain the difference in detail in dune buggy Dubai in summer vs winter.
Best time of day
- Early morning: the coolest air, soft light, fewer tyre tracks and the calmest wind. Great for photos and for anyone who wants to avoid the heat. Our morning desert safari is built around this window.
- Late afternoon to sunset: the most popular time. The dunes turn deep red, and you can finish with dinner at a desert camp.
- Midday: the harshest light and the most heat. Fine in winter, best avoided in summer.
- After dark: a completely different experience under the stars. If this interests you, read how to prepare for a night-time buggy ride.
Things to do in the red dunes
1. Dune buggy rides
Driving your own buggy across red sand is the highlight for many visitors. You follow a trained guide in a convoy, climbing and descending dunes at a speed that suits your group. No previous off-road experience is needed – you get a safety briefing and full gear before you start. See all our dune buggy tours in Dubai.
2. Dune bashing in a 4×4
A professional driver takes the wheel and drives the dunes for you. It is a roller-coaster ride, included in most desert safaris.
3. Quad biking
Smaller and more exposed than a buggy, a quad bike is great for solo riders. If you are unsure which one suits you, compare them in dune buggy vs ATV in Dubai.
4. Sandboarding
Riding a board down a red dune is easier than it looks and is a favourite with families. Read our beginner’s guide to sandboarding in Dubai before you try it.
5. Camel rides and desert camp evenings
Most evening safaris include a short camel ride, henna painting, traditional dress for photos and a buffet dinner with live shows. If you want both the adrenaline and the evening experience, look at our premium safari with dune buggy combo.
6. Sunrise and sunset photography
Even if you do nothing else, standing on top of a red dune as the sun rises or sets is worth the trip.

What to wear and bring to the red dunes
- Light, loose, long clothing – it protects you from sun and flying sand.
- Closed shoes or trainers – sand can be hot, and flip-flops come off easily.
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a cap – the sun reflects strongly off the sand.
- A light jacket from November to February for mornings and evenings.
- Water – most tours provide it, but have your own bottle too.
- A zip-lock bag for your phone – fine sand gets everywhere.

Safety tips from our guides
- Always go with a licensed operator. They know the terrain, carry recovery equipment and plan routes that match your experience.
- Follow your guide’s line. The far side of a dune can drop away sharply. Never overtake the lead vehicle.
- Keep your helmet and seatbelt on the whole time the buggy is moving.
- Drink water before you start, not only when you feel thirsty.
- Tell the guide about health conditions. Dune driving is bumpy and is not recommended for people who are pregnant or have back or neck problems.
- Respect the desert. Take your rubbish back with you and keep away from wildlife and protected areas.
Photography tips for the red dunes
- Shoot in the first and last hour of sunlight for the deepest red colour and long shadows.
- Use footprints and tyre tracks as leading lines – or find an untouched ridge for clean shots.
- Put a person on a dune crest against the sky to show the scale of the dunes.
- Protect your camera: change lenses inside the vehicle and keep a cloth handy.
- Ask your guide to stop at the high viewpoints – they know where the best views are.
