Sandboarding in Dubai: Beginner’s Guide to the Desert Adventure

Snowboarding without snow, in the warm desert air, on a slope of soft red sand – that is sandboarding in Dubai. It is one of the easiest desert activities to try, it suits almost every age, and it is often included in desert safaris and dune buggy tours in Dubai.

If you have never stood on a board before, do not worry. This beginner’s guide explains how sandboarding works, where to do it, how to ride your first run, what to wear and how to stay safe. The tips come from our guides, who watch hundreds of first-timers try it every season.

Quick answer: sandboarding in Dubai is done on the high red dunes of the Lahbab and Al Badayer (Big Red) deserts, about 45–60 minutes from the city. Beginners can start sitting down or standing on a board on a gentle slope. The best time is October to April, early morning or late afternoon.

What is sandboarding?

Sandboarding means riding down a sand dune on a board. You can ride standing up, like snowboarding, or sitting or lying down, like sledding. The board is usually a simple wooden or composite board with foot straps, and its base is waxed so it slides over the sand.

There are no ski lifts in the desert, so after each run you walk back up the dune. That walk is part of the experience – and the reason most people are happy after a few good runs.

Sandboarding vs snowboarding: what is different?

Because sand is slower, sandboarding is a great way to try board sports without fear. If you are deciding between this and a buggy, our comparison dune buggy vs sandboarding in Dubai explains both.

Where to go sandboarding in Dubai

The best sandboarding is on tall, clean dunes with a long, even slope. Around Dubai, that means:

  • Al Badayer and Big Red: the tallest, most dramatic dunes near Dubai, along the Dubai–Hatta Road. Ideal for longer runs.
  • Lahbab (the Red Dunes): wide fields of soft, deep-red sand with plenty of slopes of different heights – good for beginners and families.

Both are roughly 45–60 minutes from central Dubai. Find out more in where are the red dunes in Dubai. Sandboarding is usually done during a tour, because the guide picks a safe slope, provides the boards and knows the area.

Best time for sandboarding in Dubai

  • Season: October to April is the most comfortable. In summer, the sand and air are very hot, so only go early in the morning.
  • Time of day: early morning and late afternoon. The sand is cooler, the light is beautiful and the walk back up is easier.
  • Avoid: midday in summer and very windy days, when blowing sand makes it unpleasant.

How to sandboard: step-by-step for beginners

Step 1: Start sitting down

For your very first run, sit on the board with your feet at the front, lean back slightly and push off. It teaches you how the board moves on sand without any balance worries.

Step 2: Find your stance

Stand on flat sand and imagine someone gently pushing you from behind. The foot you put forward to catch yourself is your front foot. Left foot forward is called “regular”, right foot forward is “goofy”. Neither is better.

Step 3: Strap in on a gentle slope

Choose a short, gentle part of the dune. Put your feet in the straps across the board, shoulder-width apart, with your knees slightly bent.

Step 4: Lean back and keep weight on your back foot

This is the most important tip. On sand, the front of the board can dig in. Keep most of your weight on your back foot, knees bent, arms relaxed out to the sides for balance.

Step 5: Point straight down the slope

Beginners should ride straight down the fall line. Trying to turn across the slope too early is the most common cause of falls.

Step 6: Stopping

On sand you slow down naturally as the slope flattens. To stop sooner, gently shift your weight back and let the tail of the board drag, or simply sit down – the sand is soft.

Step 7: Try small turns

Once you are comfortable going straight, press gently with your toes or heels to carve wide, slow turns.

Guide’s tip: ask for the board to be waxed before each run. A freshly waxed base makes a huge difference to speed and fun.

Sandboarding equipment explained

You do not need to buy anything to try sandboarding on a tour, but it helps to know what you are riding:

  • The board: usually wood or a composite material, a little shorter and flatter than a snowboard. There are no metal edges, because sand does not need them.
  • Foot straps: simple adjustable straps rather than snowboard bindings. They hold your feet in place and make it easy to step off quickly.
  • Board wax: rubbed onto the base before each run. Sand is abrasive and wears wax off fast, so re-waxing is normal.
  • Sit-down boards and sleds: some tours also offer boards for sitting or lying down, which are perfect for children and nervous beginners.

Your guide will hand you a board, show you how to wax it and adjust the straps for your shoes. If a strap feels loose, ask for it to be tightened before you ride – a secure foot makes balancing much easier.

Common beginner mistakes (and how to avoid them)

  • Leaning forward: the nose digs in and you fall forward. Keep your weight back.
  • Stiff legs: keep your knees bent to absorb bumps.
  • Starting too high: learn on a short slope first, then go higher.
  • Turning too early: ride straight until you feel balanced.
  • Not waxing the board: without wax, the board barely moves.
  • Too many runs in the heat: walking up the dune is tiring – pace yourself and drink water.

What to wear and bring for sandboarding

  • Comfortable long trousers or leggings – they protect your legs when you fall.
  • Closed shoes or trainers – they fit the board straps and protect you from hot sand.
  • Sunglasses or goggles – to keep sand out of your eyes.
  • Sunscreen and a cap – the desert sun is strong even in winter.
  • Water – walking up dunes is good exercise.
  • Nothing loose in your pockets – phones and keys disappear easily in the sand.

Sandboarding safety tips

  • Ride only where your guide shows you – they check that the bottom of the slope is clear and safe.
  • One rider at a time on each slope, and move away from the landing area quickly.
  • Never board near vehicles or tyre tracks where buggies and 4x4s drive.
  • Stay away from very steep or unknown slopes – the far side of a dune can be steeper than it looks.
  • Drink water and rest between runs, especially in warmer months.
  • Skip it if you have back, knee or neck problems, or if you are pregnant.

Sandboarding for kids and families

Children usually love sandboarding, especially sitting or lying down on the board. Start them on a small, gentle slope with an adult nearby, and keep the runs short. It is a great family activity to pair with a family buggy ride or an evening desert safari with a camel ride and dinner. For buggy age rules, see age limit for dune buggy Dubai.

Photo and video tips for sandboarding

  • Film from the side, not from the top: a friend standing halfway down the slope captures the speed and the sand spray much better.
  • Use burst mode: runs are quick, and burst mode catches the best moment – including the funny falls.
  • Shoot in golden hour: early morning or late afternoon light turns the dunes deep red and makes every photo look professional.
  • Get a wide shot: a tiny rider on a huge red dune shows the scale of the desert.
  • Protect your phone: keep it in a zip-lock bag between shots, and never ride while holding it.

A simple half-day plan: buggy, sandboarding and sunset

  1. Afternoon pickup from your hotel and a drive out to the red dunes.
  2. Safety briefing and dune buggy ride – 30 minutes to an hour behind your guide.
  3. Sandboarding stop on a high ridge, with boards and wax ready.
  4. Sunset photos on the dune crest as the sand turns deep red.
  5. Optional evening camp with a camel ride, dinner and shows if you booked a safari combo.
  6. Drop-off back at your hotel.
