All our Can-Am prices are per buggy, not per person. The price covers the vehicle, the guide and the safety equipment for everyone on board, so a 4-seater shared by a family works out far cheaper per head than it first looks.

The Can-Am models we ride in Dubai

“Can-Am buggy” is a family name, not a single vehicle. The two models our guests drive most are below. Engine figures are the manufacturer’s published numbers for these model lines.

Can-Am Maverick X3 โ€“ the classic dune buggy

The Maverick X3 is the buggy that made Can-Am famous in the desert. It has a turbocharged three-cylinder Rotax engine โ€“ up to about 195 horsepower in the top Turbo RR versions โ€“ long-travel suspension and a low, wide stance that feels planted on soft sand. It uses an automatic CVT gearbox, so you simply press the accelerator and steer: there is no clutch and no gears to think about. For most guests, the X3 is the perfect balance of excitement and control, and it is the buggy used for our couple and family Can-Am rides.

Can-Am Maverick R X RS โ€“ the newest flagship

The Maverick R is Can-Am’s newest and most powerful sport side-by-side. It uses a bigger 999 cc turbocharged Rotax engine rated at up to about 240 horsepower, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and โ€“ on the X RS version โ€“ Smart-Shox semi-active suspension that adjusts the dampers many times a second as the terrain changes. In the dunes this means stronger pulls up steep faces and a calmer ride over rough sand. It is the buggy for experienced drivers and anyone who wants the best Can-Am experience available today.

Both models are fully automatic, have a roll cage, four-point or three-point harnesses, and enough suspension travel to absorb dune crests that would bounce a smaller buggy around. Our guides check every buggy before each ride: tyres, brakes, belts, harnesses, fuel and lights.

Can-Am vs Polaris: which buggy should you choose?

This is the question we hear most. Both brands are excellent and both are safe โ€“ the difference is in how they feel and what you pay.

Our honest advice: if this is your first time in a buggy and you mostly want fun photos and a taste of the dunes, a Polaris ride is excellent value. If you have driven a buggy before, love cars, or want the most powerful experience, the Can-Am is worth the extra โ€“ most guests who upgrade tell us it is the highlight of their trip. Still unsure? Why a Can-Am feels different in the dunes

Driving on sand is not like driving on a road. The surface moves under the tyres, slopes change direction every few seconds, and the top of a dune can hide a steep drop on the other side. Three things make a Can-Am stand out in these conditions:

  • Power that does not run out. Soft sand pulls on the wheels. A turbocharged Can-Am keeps climbing a steep face where a smaller buggy has to take a run-up โ€“ so you spend more time on the interesting parts of the dunes.
  • Long-travel suspension. Can-Am’s suspension soaks up the ripples and crests of the dunes, so the cabin stays steadier and you can concentrate on the driving instead of being thrown around.
  • Low, wide and stable. The wide track and low seating position make the buggy feel planted when you traverse along the side of a dune โ€“ one of the moments new drivers find most nerve-wracking.

None of this means you have to drive fast. Your guide sets a pace that matches the slowest driver in the group, and the Can-Am is just as enjoyable at a calm, steady speed.

2-seater or 4-seater Can-Am?

  • Couples and friends: the 2-seater Can-Am is lighter and more agile, and it gives you the sportiest feel. Many couples swap drivers at the photo stop so both get a turn behind the wheel โ€“ just ask your guide.
  • Families and groups of three or four: the 4-seater Can-Am has a longer wheelbase, which makes it smoother over bumps. One adult drives, everyone else enjoys the ride, and you pay one price for the buggy.
  • Bigger groups: book two or more buggies and ride together in one convoy behind the same guide.

30 minutes or 1 hour?

Thirty minutes is a great introduction. After the briefing you have enough time to get comfortable with the controls, climb and descend several dunes and stop for photos.

One hour is where a Can-Am really shines. The first ten minutes are always about learning how the buggy reacts to sand; after that, drivers relax, and the guide can take the group deeper into the dunes and onto bigger slopes. If you are choosing a Can-Am because you want the power, we recommend the hour โ€“ most guests who book 30 minutes tell us afterwards they wish they had booked longer.

What is included in every Can-Am ride

  • Your Can-Am buggy and fuel for the full booked time
  • A professional guide leading the convoy from start to finish
  • A safety briefing and a short practice before you head into the dunes
  • A helmet and goggles for every rider, plus a face scarf against the sand
  • Fully insured buggies
  • A free photo stop on a high dune
  • Drinking water

Optional extras include hotel pickup and drop-off, and combining your ride with an evening desert safari or a morning desert safari. If you want a buggy experience with dinner and entertainment in one package, see our premium safari with dune buggy.

Where you ride and how to get there

Our Can-Am rides take place in the famous red dunes south-east of Dubai, off the Dubaiโ€“Hatta Road (E44). The sand here is a deep orange-red, the dunes are high and varied, and the area is open enough for guided convoys to find fresh lines away from the busiest tracks. Learn more about the area in our guide to where the red dunes are in Dubai.

Typical one-way travel times outside rush hour:

Starting fromTypical drive
Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, DIFCAbout 45โ€“55 minutes
Deira, Bur Dubai, Dubai Airport areaAbout 45โ€“55 minutes
Al Barsha, Dubai Hills, Al QuozAbout 50โ€“60 minutes
Dubai Marina, JBR, Palm JumeirahAbout 60โ€“75 minutes

You have two ways to get there:

  • Hotel pickup: a driver collects you from your hotel lobby, takes you to the buggy base and brings you back afterwards. We send the exact pickup time on WhatsApp after you book.
  • Drive yourself: come in your own car or a rental. A normal car is fine because you park at the meeting point on the main road โ€“ you do not drive it on the sand. We share the location pin when you book.

Your Can-Am ride, step by step

  1. Book on WhatsApp. Send your date, number of people and the Can-Am you want. We reply with availability and the total price.
  2. Arrive or get picked up. Please arrive 15 minutes before your slot so there is time to get ready without rushing.
  3. Gear up. We fit helmets and goggles and give you a scarf for the sand. Loose items stay in the car or locker.
  4. Safety briefing. Your guide shows you the accelerator, brake, steering and harness, explains the hand signals the convoy uses, and walks you through how to climb and descend a dune.
  5. Practice. You drive a short loop on flat sand so you can feel the Can-Am’s power before the dunes.
  6. Into the dunes. You follow your guide’s tracks across the red dunes. The pace builds as the group gets comfortable.
  7. Photo stop. The guide stops on a high viewpoint for photos and videos of you and your Can-Am.
  8. Return and rest. Back at base you have water, a short rest and time to shake out the sand.

Plan on about three hours door to door for a 30-minute ride with hotel pickup from central Dubai, and about three and a half to four hours for a 1-hour ride.

Can-Am driving tips from our guides

We have watched thousands of first rides. These are the tips that make the biggest difference โ€“ read them once and you will feel more confident from the first minute.

  1. Smooth is fast. A Can-Am responds instantly to the accelerator. Press it progressively, not in stabs. Jerky throttle is the number-one reason new drivers feel out of control.
  2. Look where you want to go. Your hands follow your eyes. Look at the guide’s tracks ahead, not at the bonnet.
  3. Climb straight, never sideways. Go up a dune face in a straight line with steady power. Do not turn halfway up a steep slope.
  4. Ease off at the top. Lift the accelerator just before the crest so you do not fly over a ridge you cannot see beyond. Your guide signals before every steep drop.
  5. Let the buggy roll down. When descending, keep the wheels straight and use gentle brake โ€“ not the full brake. Turning sharply on a steep descent is what you must avoid.
  6. Keep your distance. Stay far enough behind the buggy in front that you can see its tracks and stop calmly. Sand clouds hide the terrain if you follow too closely.
  7. Hands inside, harness on. Keep both hands on the wheel and arms inside the cage. Harnesses stay fastened until the buggy has fully stopped.
  8. Tell us if you want to slow down โ€“ or speed up. The guide adapts the route to the group. Nobody will push you beyond what feels comfortable.

Safety, licence and age

Licence: on a guided Can-Am ride you do not need an off-road licence. You receive a full briefing and practice, and your guide controls the route and the pace. Read more in do you need a licence to drive a dune buggy in Dubai.

Age: minimum age rules apply for drivers, and children can ride as passengers in the 4-seater with an adult driving. Please check age limit for dune buggy Dubai or tell us the ages in your group when you book.

Who should not ride: dune driving is bumpy. It is not recommended during pregnancy, for anyone with back, neck or heart problems, or after recent surgery. If you are unsure, message us โ€“ we will be honest about whether the ride is right for you or suggest a gentler option such as a morning desert safari.

What we do on every ride:

  • Every buggy is checked before it goes out โ€“ tyres, brakes, harnesses, steering and fuel.
  • Every rider wears a helmet. Harnesses stay on whenever the buggy moves.
  • The guide leads at all times. Drivers never overtake the lead vehicle.
  • Routes are chosen for the experience level of the group and the conditions of the day.
  • If wind, a sandstorm or heavy rain makes riding unsafe, we contact you to move your booking.

Best time for a Can-Am ride in Dubai

The most comfortable season is October to April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and the evenings can even be cool. From May to September, rides are best in the cooler early-morning and late-afternoon slots. We explain the seasons in detail in dune buggy Dubai in summer vs winter.

  • Morning: the coolest air, the calmest wind and smooth, untouched sand โ€“ a favourite for experienced drivers.
  • Late afternoon and sunset: the dunes turn deep red and the photos are spectacular. This is our busiest slot, so book a day or two ahead.
  • After dark: riding under the stars is a completely different experience. See how to prepare for a night-time buggy ride.

What to wear and bring

  • Light, long, loose clothing that you do not mind getting sandy.
  • Closed shoes or trainers โ€“ not flip-flops, which come off easily.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for before and after the ride.
  • A light jacket for early mornings and evenings from November to February.
  • A phone pouch or zip-lock bag โ€“ fine sand gets everywhere.
  • Long hair tied back so it fits comfortably under the helmet.

Our full checklist is in what to wear for a dune buggy adventure in Dubai.

Group, birthday and corporate Can-Am rides

A Can-Am convoy is one of the most memorable ways to celebrate in Dubai. Because every buggy follows the same guide, a group of friends or colleagues stays together the whole time, and everyone gets their own turn behind the wheel.

  • Birthdays and anniversaries: tell us when you book and we will plan the photo stop at sunset on one of the highest dunes โ€“ the best backdrop for a celebration photo.
  • Friends’ groups and bachelor parties: mix 2-seaters for the confident drivers with 4-seaters for those who prefer to ride along. Everyone travels in the same convoy.
  • Corporate and team events: buggy convoys are a strong team experience โ€“ people talk about it for weeks afterwards. Send us your group size and preferred date and we will suggest the best combination of buggies and timings.
  • Mixed groups: if some of your group want a Can-Am and others prefer a calmer Polaris family ride, we can usually arrange both at the same time slot so you start and finish together.

For larger groups, book a few days ahead โ€“ especially for weekend sunset slots in the cooler months, which fill up first.

Getting great photos and video from your Can-Am ride

A Can-Am in the red dunes is one of the most photogenic scenes in the UAE. A few simple habits will give you pictures worth keeping:

  • Use the photo stop. The guide stops on a high dune with a clear view โ€“ that is the safest and best moment for photos. Never film while you are driving.
  • Shoot low and wide. Crouch down and photograph the buggy from the front corner with the dunes behind it. It makes the Can-Am look powerful and shows the scale of the desert.
  • Go for golden hour. The first and last hour of sunlight turn the sand deep red and give long shadows. Midday light is flat and pale.
  • Ask a passenger to film. In a 4-seater, a passenger can safely record short clips from the back seat with the phone held firmly in both hands.
  • Protect your phone. Keep it in a zip-lock bag or a sealed pocket while driving. Fine sand gets into ports and camera lenses very quickly.
  • Clean the lens before each shot. A quick wipe with a soft cloth makes a surprising difference after a dusty ride.

How to choose a Can-Am operator in Dubai

Many companies advertise “Can-Am buggy Dubai”. Use these checks before you pay anyone โ€“ including us:

  1. Ask which Can-Am model it is. “Can-Am” can mean an older, less powerful model. You should know whether you are getting a Maverick X3 or a Maverick R, and how many seats.
  2. Check the price is per buggy and how many minutes of actual driving it includes, not counting the briefing.
  3. Confirm what is included: guide, helmet, goggles, water, insurance and photo stop.
  4. Ask about pickup โ€“ private or shared, the pickup time and the exact cost.
  5. Look for a real guide-led convoy. A guide should lead every ride, and drivers should never be sent into the dunes alone.
  6. Read recent reviews on Google and look for comments about safety and punctuality, not just the view.
  7. Make sure there are no surprise charges for fuel, cleaning or photos on the day.

A good operator answers all of this in one message. If the answers are vague, or the price changes after you arrive, book elsewhere.
